Exploratory Writing Prompt: uncertainty

In answering these questions, liberate yourself from or adhere to facts at will. Make things up, be absurd, and/or admit that you don’t know and use that as your point of inquiry. Then answer the following questions in full sentences or phrases, writing whatever comes to mind. Dive into each answer by asking and answering the question “why” at least three times. As always, this writing prompt is intended to be a jumping-off point, so go where the impulse takes you.

Consider a time you were uncertain.

Where in your body did you feel the uncertainty?
Who else was uncertain?
What do you know for sure is true?
Where do you feel that knowing in your body?
Was your uncertainty a wobble, a tremor, an earthquake, or a hug?
What else do you know to be true?
What did you feed your uncertainty?
What did you hope was true?
What did your uncertainty feed you?
Was your uncertainty a fog, a blindfold, or a flashlight?
What do you hope is true?
Who holds that hope with you?
Where does that hope live in your body?
What will happen when this hope becomes reality?
What will you hope then?
